2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. But, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results tell a compelling story: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the explosion in gaming appears particularly pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess natural design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year so far.

If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
